Bumstead! Wash My Car!

And now, the most terrifying piece of news today:

"Court rules bosses are still authority figures outside of work"

From MPR:  "The Minnesota Court of Appeals has ruled that a boss is still an authority figure in sexual misconduct that occurs outside the workplace. . . The panel said a supervisor doesn't lose his or her coercive power as an authority figure simply because the sexual misconduct occurs off company time or off the work premises."

I understand that this applies to sexual harassment, but it’s a horrible precedent. You meet your boss in the grocery store, and he says “meet me in refrigerated dairy in ten minutes with some ideas for supper,” and you have no choice but to obey.

yeah, I got your choices right here, bubba...

of COURSE you have choices. the time honored one is, "do that during work hours, or pay the double-time, my man."

what, the rest of you aren't union workers? that's on-call overtime we're talking about. past 49 hours in my shop, easy double-time, and on-call is minimum pay of two hours worth, plus commuting expense reimbursement.

as for sexual or other harassment, strictly prohibited, the boss can be fired and lose their options and retirement. we have an 800 number to report workplace shenanigans, and they MUST be investigated by the HQ staff.

so yeah, bubba, bring it on. say, meet my SO, works with an office full of lawyers. this is the person I was telling you about, hon.

I think you're interpreting

I think you're interpreting the decision incorrectly. The court didn't rule that the boss can order you around outside of work. Basically, the court was extending the protections enjoyed (bad word, I know) by the employer beyond the workplace specially because the employer could, in theory, intimidate you outside of work otherwise.

The court didn't say your job description extended outside of work hours. So, no, you can't be ordered to wash the bosses' car outside of work. You have the same choices that a non-employee has outside of work.
