Vidcast: Shovel Shopping (larger)

If you think you know how to shovel, well, you’re wrong. It’s an art. You have to know the angles. The stance. The grip. The lingo. This three-minute video should prove my point.

Thanks to the guys at Settytown for the demonstration.

What about a really heavy snow storm?

The snow-plow shovel looked to be great for 2-3 inches of snow, but how does it work when you have a couple of feet of snow to move?
Maybe it's a 'right tool for the right job' kind of thing.

Off-topic: what's the deal with the Buzz.mongolia header? Right now I've got the usual three pictures and logo, but on the main page I had just one picture with no logo, and on another comments page I had no header whatsoever. Granted, it reduces the likelihood of me seeing the DFK or the giant creepy orange mask of doom, but it's weird.

snow shovels

You really need more than one snow shovel. A pusher is great for the small snowfalls, if you get out there before your walk gets trampled. The pusher is no good if you have to throw the snow over a snow bank.

Of course, you need a shovel with a nice scoop to lift the deep snow. Good for throwing the snow, too.

Then you need a shovel with a metal blade for dealing with the snow that the city plow dumps on the driveway apron. A plastic blade won't cut it. The grain scoop sort of works, but I prefer a standard steel transfer shovel for when the snow is really thick and icy.

An ice chopper rounds off the set.

Oh yeah, get a nice stiff push broom, too.
